The situation
Our clients, a mix of growing SMEs and property-management businesses, wanted to grow. They had more possible opportunities than capacity to pursue them, and decisions about where to focus were being made one at a time, without a clear view of how the business actually made its money.
The challenge
The problem wasn't finding opportunities. It was connecting each business's current position, business model, performance and constraints into a set of decisions management could actually carry out.
What we did
We worked through six questions in order, so every growth decision was made with context rather than in isolation:
| Stage | The question it answers |
|---|---|
| Current position | Where does the business really stand today? |
| Business model | How does it create and capture value? |
| Performance | What is working, what isn't, and why? |
| Opportunity | Where is there credible room to grow? |
| Constraint | What could stop the team delivering it? |
| Strategic priority | What should become an initiative with an owner and a plan? |
For property-management clients, the same approach connected portfolio performance, operational delivery, commercial opportunities and risk.
What changed
Each client came away with clear growth priorities, the process improvements needed to support them, and a roadmap the team could execute. Just as useful, management had a shared way to tell what was attractive, what was feasible and what should come first.
The principle: strategy is a sequence of decisions. Understand where you stand, test what is feasible, then choose what to act on.
What we learned
The most attractive opportunity on paper is not always the right one. Capacity and constraints decide what a business should prioritise, so they belong in the analysis from the start.
